Astronaut Charles Bolden visits BDA

Astronaut Charles Bolden was in Bonaire November 25 till December 2 2006. General Bolden is also a scuba diver. Tuesday November 28 he and his daughter Kelly paid Bonaire Dive & Adventure a visit to dive Bari Reef, the #1 on fish diversity. Kelly performed her second dive ever on Bari Reef, supervised by BDA instructor Rommel Rivas. Father and daughter were very impressed by Bari Reef. Mr. Bolden told us some very interesting similarities between diving and space walking that we usually do not realize. Like divers, space walkers have to cope with differences in pressure and have to watch out for decompression problems. Astronauts train in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL), that provides controlled neutral buoyancy operations in the facility water tank to simulate the zero-g or weightless condition. On the picture we see Rommel, Kelly, Andre (owner of BDA) Charles Bolden and Ben Buchbinder, Bonaire resident and an old friend of general Bolden. During his volunteer work at the Pelikaan School, Buchbinder discovered that a number of young people were very interested in space, and he decided to invite the astronaut to talk with Bonaire’s youth.
